Listing and Sorting by the First Letter of a Last Name

FileMaker Knowledge Base

This article discusses how to list and sort the data in your database in a Rolodex like fashion; allowing you to print out a directory of names with different pages for each initial. This technique assumes that you have fields called "LastName" and "FirstName" in which you have entered the last and first names of the people in your database.

FileMaker Go in Business: Lee Medical web	seminar

"FileMaker Go in Business: Lee Medical" Webinar

While U.S. hospital-acquired infections are on the rise, the prognosis is good in one important area: bloodstream infections.

These are often caused by mismanagement of IV catheters in patients' veins and by poor catheter insertion. Fortunately, contract vascular access specialists Lee Medical, along with help from FileMaker Go, now drive down the troubling frequency and cost of Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSI) through their highly successful VAST® solution.

Join us for an informative real world look at how FileMaker Go helps Lee Medical save millions of healthcare dollars and improve patient outcomes by reducing blood stream infection rates through the use of real time surveillance.

FileMaker user groups make learning social

UK FileMaker User Groups

While you'll find plenty of great community based advice at our User Group pages over at www.filemaker.co.uk, sometimes it's nice to get some friendly face-to-face advice and knowledge sharing too.

That's just the kind of thing you'll find at one of our User Group meetings, which are run regularly across the country, bringing together FileMaker developers and professionals from the local area to share information and best practice.

The FileMaker South West Users group, hosted by Nick Stockbridge at the Transmedia Training offices in Bristol, is going from strength to strength. "Maybe people have heard how helpful the group is to one another", says Nick. "We alternate between specific topic demonstrations, such as creating a universal 'Back' navigation between layouts, and free-for-all sessions, where members bring in their projects to ask for assistance from others. There's always someone with a good idea to share and we have room for more".

Forthcoming Meetings:

   • Brighton User Group, Brighton, 19:00, 27th January 2012
   • South West User Group, Bristol, 18:30-20:00, 5th March 2012

Searching Across Relationships for “Empty” Fields

Jud Wolfskill, The Support Group

Have you ever wanted to find records where a certain field is empty? Suppose you are updating your contact database and trying to capture email addresses for as many people as possible. You need to find every person for whom you do not have an email address. When searching in FileMaker, the equal sign operator (=) is used to find an exact match; when used by itself in a field, with nothing else following it, it tells FileMaker to find records where the field is empty. So… easy enough, right?.
